George Zimmerman's Attorney Mounts Unconventional "Shitty Knock-Knock Joke" Defense Strategy
(THE GIST) — In an attempt to lighten the mood around a trial involving the possible cold-blooded murder of an unarmed teenager, George Zimmerman's attorney, Don West, told a good old fashioned knock-knock joke. With the jury and audience basically a captive audience, West must have felt as though the trial which involves problems of race and self-defense in addition to the death of a teenager as a decent place to test out some new material.
West qualified his joke beforehand, admitting that the idea of telling a joke "may sound a bit weird in this context" and then somehow drawing the conclusion that the courtroom was "the perfect audience for it". He expressed his hope that the jury would not hold the potential failure of the joke against Zimmerman, thus creating the perfect conditions for the failure of a punchline.
The joke itself? Not actually that bad.
Knock Knock. Who's There? George Zimmerman. George Zimmerman Who? Alright good, you're on the jury.
West seemed surprised by the uncomfortable silence that pervaded the room afterwards, which if you watch the clip may have been due to the inexorable lead-in and the delivery which was executed as though it were a Law & Order voiceover.
